The Square · An Aesopic fable

The North Wind and the Sun

A cloaked traveller crosses Alrewaq’s stone square beneath a changeable sky.

The North Wind and the Sun were arguing about which of them was stronger.

A traveller passed below, wrapped in a cloak.

They agreed: whoever could make him remove it would win.

A gust makes the traveller grip his cloak more tightly.

The Wind went first.

It blew fiercely. But the traveller gripped his cloak. Every stronger gust made him pull it closer.

At last, the Wind gave up.

In the sun’s warmth, the traveller carries his removed cloak over his arm.

Then the Sun began to shine.

As the air grew warmer, the traveller loosened his cloak.

A little later, he took it off.

Reflection

The harder the wind pushed, the more tightly the traveller held on. In our relationships, pressure can deepen resistance; a calmer approach may make it easier for someone to reconsider.

Gentleness can reach where force cannot.

About this story & sources

An Alrewaq retelling of an Aesopic fable, not a historical encounter. The explanation and reflection are Alrewaq’s interpretation, not quotations attributed to Aesop. Gentleness is an invitation to reconsider pressure, not a claim that it resolves every conflict. The artwork is Alrewaq’s Square.
